Oskar Henningsson Q School winner

Henningsson: won impressively

Hello again, sorry for missing last week's column, but I was shattered after Shanghai and couldn't put one word in front of another!

I read your comments on the last column and here are some of my thoughts on them.

To Jose Coyle and Darragh McMenamin, our moments of the year were that rather than the best shot of the year. Padraig's wonderful 5 wood at the 17th en route to winning the Open at Royal Birkdale I'm sure will be shot of the year, and so it should be. What a time to produce that kind of brilliance. I suspect Richard Finch's dip in the river at the Irish Open will be a close second.

Les Calderwood enthused about more Irish talent emerging in the shape of Michael Hoey and Jonathan Caldwell and made interesting points about how the pound, the euro and the US dollar will affect the Tours around the globe.

We will have to wait and see Les, at the moment, I try to avoid the financial pages as the only thing we can be sure of is poor news. Don't drink all off that wine in South Africa as we look forward to finishing off the season at Leopard Creek and Paarl.

Alfonso Martinez heard whispers about a big event in southern Spain. Alfonso, the match play there next year will be a great attraction to the Costa del Sol, and I believe another possibility may be in the pipeline. The Singapore Open becomes part of the Tour next year, so no worries about clashing with any other event.

Matt Southcombe wonders if the Race to Dubai will attract more big names to the European Tour. Already Matt, Camilo Villegas and Anthony Kim have joined and I'm of the opinion several more are thinking about it and some will sign up.

It's not the European answer to the Fed-Ex Cup, as that has gone a little pear shaped, but it does herald a new dawn in Europe. We will see how it all pans out over the next twelve months.

Exciting times

Julia Roberts and Rob Walker spoke warmly of Wayne Riley's contribution to our commentary team. Chris Dunn was of another opinion. One cannot please everyone Chris and one of the worst parts of this job is criticism, but it happens and will continue to do so.

Wayne is different I agree, but he has a strong passion for the job and the game in general and I think that comes out on screen, you also said you marvel at the new European Tour and I can understand why. Taking on the might of the PGA Tour was not easy, but CEO George O'Grady has done that with outstanding success.

These are exciting times for all who is involved and that of course includes you as Sky Sports now have this new venture in front of us. For the first time, we will have the BBC events live on Thursday and Friday with extensive highlights in Golf Night at the weekend.

The World Golf Championships is with us for the next four years and to compliment that, long-term deals are signed to bring you the US Open and the US PGA.

My thanks to Andrew Norby who did "a Mickelson" with his Chinese writing. Phil learned over the last year to sign his name in Chinese much to the liking of those in Shanghai. Andrew, I left the "hooky" clubs alone, but I did buy a "Del Boy" watch known as a Shanghai Special. It has lasted the week!

I'm with you on the Scottish and Irish Opens. They should be either side of the Open or the two weeks before our great championship. We should put July down to Links golf as Carnoustie, Portmarnock and the Open venue would provide wonderful viewing during that month. You never know, it might just happen in the years ahead.

Quality

The European Tour school has just finished and well done to those who will join the Tour at this exciting time.

The pressure of playing at the qualifying school is awful, yet I'm amazed at the quality of the golf and the scoring.

A new name from Sweden, Oskar Henningsson, won impressively managing five rounds in the sixties. We will look forward to seeing him for the first time, probably at Leopard Creek next month.

The superb talents of young Danny Willett and Chris Wood were enough to see them safely through. Willett fired a 63 in round three, Chris had four rounds in the 60s and by finishing in the top ten, they will get many chances to impress in 2009.

Since making the Walker Cup team at the turn of the Century, Michael Hoey has struggled to find his best form as a professional. His 67 in the final round in Spain will do much for his confidence.

Big league

On the Tartan Tour in Scotland, Chris Doak has dominated over the past two seasons. He now gets his chance in the big league and I look forward to following his progress.

Two former Ryder Cup players return to where they belong. Joakim Heaggman was the first Swede to play in the Ryder Cup 15 years ago. Sometimes players lose their way, other times injury and a lack of belief prove costly. Older and wiser, Joakim is capable of returning to the winners circle as is 1999 Ryder Cupper, Andrew Coltart.

I played with Andrew a few years back at my home club of Mannings Heath. He always impressed me with his ball striking, his calm manner and his consistency. Having moved back to his native Scotland, his alliance with top coach Colin Brooks has paid dividends and he now gets the chance of a second career. He is an all round decent chap and I wish him well.

Fellow countryman, David Drysdale also made it comfortably. He is far too good a player to have to go back to the school and this is not the first time he has had to do that.

It's time for him to get off to a good start and realise the talent he has. For those who missed out, it's another year on the Challenge Tour, for those who graduated, they are part of the Race to Dubai. They can chase their dreams, and as we all know, dreams can become a reality.

Excellent news that Seve is on the mend and hopefully there is a place for him on the Ryder cup team on capacity.Nick Faldo had his chance of being captain and failed.I have to admit that i turned off the TV during his opening ceremony speech due to feeling extremely embarresed for the man, He used that speech to promote himself and his family instead of promoting and hyping up his own team. Lastly i hope to see more of Fred Couples on the tour this year as he is a joy to watch. Unlike Monty when the camera goes on Couples you can never tell his score by his body language he could be 10 under or 10 over !!!!

I think this is a story even more worthy than any superstar golfer from past or present and after I had a quick investigation of the PGA's Stats it's all the more remarkable. I am proud to be from County Antrim originally and we do have a dogged never say die character. What a fantastic win for Jimmy Heggarty who went out on the last day of senior tour school and put all the old woes to bed and proved just how good he really is,but more than that he showed his love for the game and since 1976 when he joined the tour he has played on despite all the odds. I mean take a look at the stats I post below. This man must have the most understanding and supportive family and friends . Is it not just wonderful to win and prove yourself? I applaud Jimmy Heggarty and I hope he continues for many more years! Look at these stats and tell me if this guy loves the game ? This guy is an example of the "lesser lights" who are infact more important to the PGA than even MR FALDO 2008 Seniors Tour ¿23,020 f 60 2007 Seniors Tour ¿41,998 f43 2006 Seniors Tour ¿53,145 f34 1996 European Tour £3,975 f 211 1995 European Tour £5,574 f190 1994 European Tour £1,719 f 227 1992 European Tour £13,960 f164 1991 European Tour £39,699 f90 1990 European Tour £37,369 f90 1989 European Tour £31,161 f82 1988 European Tour £20,266 f92 1987 European Tour £14,129 f91 1986 European Tour £12,854 f72 1985 European Tour £7,434 f97 1984 European Tour £5,952 f94 1983 European Tour £2,664 f117 1982 European Tour £1,763 f119 1981 European Tour £7,962 f49 1980 European Tour £910 f122 1979 European Tour £700 f147 1978 European Tour £1,062 f98 1977 European Tour £204 f137 1976 European Tour £560 f115 This game is about the competitors not just the Superstars!

welcome back Ewen, nice piece there on the Q-School. great to see Chris Wood and Danny Willet.come through and i look forward to seeing how these 'new' boys fair on the tour. Rory Mcilroy is an example of it not being at all easy out there after 'standout' amateur careers. I was pleased to see him finish strong last week and now he knows the courses better I really hope to see him win soon. I felt sorry for the touring pro at my local club, Richard Mcevoy who missed out by a shot. That has to be tough pill to swallow! Lovely news about Seve recovering well, it will be a long road but I was pleased to hear he is making progress.

I am grateful to Brian, for his positive comments about my book and if anyone else is interested then they should check out my website www.golfontheedge.co.uk. I've been at every stage of Q School this year and have spoken to Chris Wood and Danny Willett extensively. They are both confident and classy young golfers and will not be returning to Q School any time soon.

Wayne Riley is good value on course because he calls it how it is. Aussie humour and and been there attitude is refreshing. I bet the producers are on the edge of there seats though!. One of my moments of the year was when the Monty fired off at the photographer and his comment about his bulging wallet in his back pocket was priceless!!. Just a comment about Faldo for captain again. I dont think so!!. You deserved your chance and not everything was bad but that opening speech Pleeese. !!!!! Also great news about Seve improving and I am sure I speak for all the golf fans that some kind of role for this great champion on the tour would be a perfect tonic for him when hopefully he regains full health. Is there something we could all do to promote this idea ?. Steven Standage

Fantastic for the winning 32 players to have performed on each day under so much pressure- well done, and long may it continue. Ewen, if I may put a little plug-in for Ross Biddiscombe and his book "Golf On The Edge" (an account of Q-School in the european sense), it´s a super read and tells of the somewhat harder side to golf on the European Tour periphery.

I am delighted for Chris Doak in gaining his European Tour card! He has had a fantastic season in winning the Tartan Tour, PGA Playoffs and now gaining his card. After three rounds and lying in 107th place the pressure was on knowing he had to make the cut by getting into the top 70. A nine under par 62 (the lowest score of the tournament - containing no dropped shots) followed and that moved him up 84 places to 23rd. Two steady rounds followed to tie for 15th place. The fact that Chris was four over after 6 holes in the first round and the quality of his 4th round score, given the circumstances, shows a mental strength that will help him with the pressures of the European Tour. From a personal and local point of view Chris' success has been brilliant for the Inverclyde and Renfrewshire golfing and sporting areas. Chris first took up golf at the municipal Whinhill Golf Course in Greenock, showing just what an important part municipal golf courses play in the development of the game of golf. I hope and am confident that his success can inspire many young golfers in the West of Scotland currently playing the game. As a Scot and in a year where few Scots played in the British Open and no Scot made the Ryder Cup team, I wish Chris, Andrew Coltart, David Drysdale and Callum MacAulay all the very best for the upcoming year!

Thanks for your answers! Do you agree with R&A decition of not allowing Turnberry to be permanent home of the European Open if they want to stay in The Open Rotation? What would you do? Annual big ET event or a British each ten years at most! Thanks!

Hello..Having been a member and played a lot of golf with a certain John E morgan i am interested to hear your thoughts on what he needs to do in order to stay in the big league..As you know he has had a rollercoaster of a career to date..He has undoubted talent but has been unfortunate with injuries. He is very experienced at the lower level but do you think he has the game to be consistent on the main tour.

Good morning from sunny Protea Valley !I will not bleet on about the next few days weather down here because after listening to Lisa Burke on Sky weather It looks like the "brass monkeys" will be out in force in the UK. Salt in wounds and all that! Thanks for reminding everyone I know Ewen about my copious Red Wine consumption but I can assure you that I am infact a connoissieur of fine wines! So ok if it was a trip around Speyside then you might get worried about running out of Whiskey .I can assure you that South Africa has plenty of wine left over for you guys! Yes heady days indeed for Ulster golf.Next they'll be bringing David Feherty back to translate on the tour! I do agree with your point on the financial world, however Golf has a bit of a reputation of a sport for the well heeled maybe the Big Chiefs of the PGA will spin out it's vast machine and try not to let Corporate banks advertising to be so "In your face" There has no doubt been a bit of an "anti city slicker" feeling around lately. As for Wayne Riley well what can one say? faired income mate like every TV sports company should have one! My wee fella Callum turned two last week and he thinks Wayne is the pilot in the Cbeebies "Koala Brothers" Honestly Golf needs a bit of enthusiasm and Wayne is good for the sport, err but please don't bring him to Paarl, they put Aussies on the "Braai" down here! I enjoy your Blogg Ewen ,It is refreshing to see your professional approach to journalism because I have seen guys paid much much more than you as news journalists who struggle to put up one blogg every two months!I will not name anyone! but he has an Ulster accent as well!

I know it is tradition/histort but do we have to have seasoned pro's and talented newcomers going to tour school? In this day and age surely a more comfortable name such as tour challenge etc would be better and more suited to these highly skilled individuals.
