Comparing Romelu Lukaku’s stats to the rest of the Prem’s forwards

Quick Reads

Despite sitting second in the Premier League’s goalscoring charts this season, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has still attracted plenty of criticism.

Lukaku has failed to hit the back of the net in his last five matches, which has led some fans and pundits questioning what he offers the team when he isn’t scoring.

The Belgium international signed for the Red Devils in the summer for an initial £75million and hit the ground running at Old Trafford, scoring 11 goals in his first 10 matches for the club. If you are using historical records to build your prediction models, Lukaku’s streakiness is unlikely to have passed you by.

However, Mourinho thinks that although the fans are entitled to their opinion, Lukaku should be “untouchable” from criticism following his contributions this season.

“The fans are the fans. They pay for their ticket and are free to express how they want to express but my job is to protect my players when they deserve it,” Mourinho said.

“Romelu is one of the players who should be untouchable in terms of respect from everyone. It’s not one goal or the ball going against the post or a save by the opposition keeper that can make Romelu’s contribution below the top level. He is playing extremely well for us.

“I need to protect my players when I feel they deserve it most. What he does for the team is fantastic. It is not just about scoring goals. He is untouchable in my team and I feel he should be untouchable with the fans.”
