Next season will mark a new era for Bayern Munich after Philipp Lahm announced he will retire at the end of the current campaign.
Lahm made his 500th appearance for Bayern at the weekend, and speaking after the Bavarian’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg in the German Cup on Tuesday night he confirmed he will retire as a professional footballer despite having another year left to run on his contract.
The 33-year-old’s status as a legend of German football has already been cemented having captained his country to World Cup glory in 2014, as well as winning the Champions League, seven Bundesliga titles and six German Cups with Bayern.
Having operated in both full-back roles and as a holding midfielder, Lahm has rarely been a footballer to attract headlines, but as the following quotes show, he has earned the respect of some of the greatest names in football.
