Three teams have won Europe’s second-tier competition on this day in history – and Manchester United will be aiming to follow in their footsteps when they face Ajax in the final of the Europa League on May 24.
While the competition has largely operated in the shadow of the European Cup/Champions League, the UEFA Cup – as it was more fondly known – still has a rich and varied history.
And there is no doubt that Jose Mourinho is taking the competition seriously, having put all his eggs in a Europa League-shaped basket in United’s attempts to secure Champions League qualification.
