Former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud tried his best to fire some invention into a lacklustre Chelsea performance away at Newcastle.
Chelsea needed a win away at St James’ Park to stand any chance of overtaking Liverpool and making it into the top four of the Premier League table on the final day of the season.
But they found themselves a goal down at half-time, after Dwight Gayle followed in on a Thibaut Courtois save to put Rafa Benitez’s men one up.
And Newcastle extended their lead as Ayoze Perez hit a quickfire double around the hour mark with Chelsea struggling to have any impact on the game.
Giroud tried to create something special, though, and came very close to doing so only for Martin Dubravka to pull off an excellent save at full stretch to prevent what would have been an equaliser.
The French forward connected with Ross Barkley’s cross with a left-footed backheel volley, which was looping towards the top corner, only for the on-loan goalkeeper to tip it over the bar.
