Manchester United secured top spot in Champions League Group A with a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night – and Juan Mata was key to their success.
Mata was an unused substitute in United’s last two Premier League games, but he was restored to the starting line-up against CSKA and responded with a terrific display to help Jose Mourinho’s side into the knockout stages.
United, needing only a point to top the group, fell behind just prior to the half-time whistle, but their dominance eventually paid off midway through the second half when Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford scored within two minutes of each other.
Paul Pogba, starting ahead of his league ban, set up Lukaku’s goal and again impressed, but it was Mata that caught the eye most. His assist for what proved to be the winner from Rashford can only be described as sumptuous.

It was one of four chances Mata created on the night, and his footwork to lose two CSKA players later on had United fans purring, with the only slight disappointment being Anthony Martial not managing to score on his birthday after being introduced as a striker 17 minutes from the end.
