Arsenal may have a reputation as a soft touch these days, but Arsene Wenger’s early years in charge of the club were characterised by a tough, uncompromising spine to his side.
Central defender Keown and captain Vieira did not take any prisoners on the field, with the duo renowned for relishing a physical battle.
But former Leeds manager Eddie Gray has revealed the pair were given a fright by Viduka on one occasion Leeds visited Highbury.
Keown went in hard on the Australian just before half-time, and the striker responded by chasing the defender up the tunnel and lifting him into the air by his throat.
As Vieira approached the bust-up, Viduka simply warned: “You’re next.”
