Madrid defeated Alaves by four goals to nil at the Bernabeu, with Benzema, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale all scoring in the same game for the first time in almost two years.
Ronaldo hit a brace, sandwiching Bale’s first goal in a month, before denying himself the opportunity to grab a hat-trick, in a poor league season by his standards.
Benzema had been booed by Real supporters throughout the match, and missing a very clear goalscoring opportunity didn’t help win him any fans.
But come the 89th minute, Ronaldo showed a selfless act which the spectator from afar may not expect, as he afforded the Frenchman the chance to silence his doubters.
He had scored just three league goals this season – and Ronaldo decided that Benzema’s two assists already made in the match weren’t enough, allowing him to take the penalty to improve his scoring record.
