One of football’s most unheralded heroes has decided to call it a day, with Dirk Kuyt announcing his retirement this week.
Kuyt was by no means the perfect footballer, but he was always a fan favourite wherever he played and seems impossible not to love – unless you support Manchester United, perhaps.
Over a 19-year professional career, Kuyt represented Utrecht, Feyenoord, Liverpool and Fenerbahce, while he also won an incredible 104 caps for Holland.
“Throughout my career I have always followed my heart when taking decisions and that goes for this one too,” Kuyt told.
“To me this feels like the right time to retire. I have had two fantastic years here since returning to Feyenoord, with this season’s title as the absolute pinnacle.
“I had the dream of winning trophies and becoming a champion with Feyenoord. All my dreams have come true.”
We’ve looked back on some of the 36-year-old’s best moments to explain why Kuyt was so universally loved.
