7 potential Liverpool signings if Ruben Amorim succeeds Jurgen Klopp

Ruben Amorim has become one of the favourites to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool – but which players would he bring with him to Anfield?

Amorim favours a 3-4-3 formation, which essentially becomes an old-school ‘W-M’ in possession (you’ll know all about that).

Based on this, we’ve identified the players the Sporting Lisbon coach should target in the summer transfer window, should he arrive on Merseyside.

Ousmane Diomande

Liverpool are thin on the ground in terms of centre-backs, with Joel Matip seemingly on his way out. Amorim tends to use three centre-backs, as opposed to the two central defenders favoured by Klopp. Central defenders, then, are a main priority.

Diomande is someone Amorim knows well, as he’s currently the Ivorian’s boss at Sporting.

With a profile similar to that of Virgin Van Dijk—quick, strong, comfortable on the ball and excellent passing – Diomande would be a great fit for Liverpool – possibly as the driving force stepping out of the centremost defensive position to start attacks with the midfielders and wing-backs.

At only 20 years old, his potential is through the roof. Newcastle were looking at Diomande in January and are desperate for a centre-back themselves, but his existing relationship with Amorim could sway the wonderkid towards Merseyside.

Antonio Silva

Silva is another central defender with whom Amorim is all too familiar; the 20-year-old is Lisbon rivals Benfica’s bright young thing.

Another dynamic centre-back who would be perfect on the right side of a three-man defence, with excellent passing, strength and speed, and would love the opportunity to play with one of his idols, VDV.

Rayan Ait Nouri

If Amorim goes for his cherished 3-4-3 / W-M formation, Joe Gomez ain’t going to be playing as a left wingback/midfielder.

He’ll slot into the back three, where he’ll probably excel, but that leaves Liverpool a bit short in the left wingback area. Andy Robertson would have a field day, but the Scot has struggled with injury and form this season.

Konstantinos Tsimikas has deputised well when needed, but he’s also crocked at the moment and probably isn’t a long-term replacement for Robertson, so a left wingback is another priority position for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp has already recommended Wolves’ fearless wingback Ait Nouri as a signing for Liverpool this summer, and we reckon he’d have loads of fun down the Reds’ left side.

Josh Doig

The last time a PL team bought a wingback from a Serie A club, it worked out pretty well, with Aaron Hickey making a great start at Brentford before a hamstring injury ruled him out for a little while.

Secondly, Liverpool already have a very experienced Scot in this position. Doig is young and we can think of no better tutor to maximise his development than his compatriot Andy Robertson.

The Sassuolo defender could be a financially savvy option for the Reds to pursue.

Luca Netz

Netz has loads of potential, can play up and down the left wing, as well as on the left-hand side of a back three.

He’s featured in all but three of Monchengladbach’s 27 games so far, this season, and has made four assists, which isn’t bad for a team in 13th position (of 18).

Another potentially cheap option to bolster the Reds’ understaffed left side.

Viktor Gyokeres

Gyokeres has been a sensation for Amorim’s Sporting, this year, and Liverpool could do with more depth in the centre-forward position.

The Sweden international has 36 goals in 41 appearances for Sporting, this season. Chuck in 15 assists on top of that and we are witnessing a quite ridiculous season.

They’re prime Lionel Messi numbers. Say what you like about the Portuguese Primeira Liga, that is a f*cking stupid record, and the season ain’t done yet.

Arsenal are sniffing around the 25-year-old. Amorim would be insane not to start lending the striker Beatles records and taking Scouse lessons with him.

Pedro Goncalves

In a 3-4-3, Trent Alexander-Arnold would be perfect in that right wingback position, and that’s if he can get in the team ahead of the revelation that is Conor Bradley.

If central midfield is to be a double pivot, the Reds have plenty of depth, there in Szoboszlai, Endo, Mac Allister, Jones, Gravenberch, Bajcetic, and young Bobby Clark.

Right wing (or inside forward) is fine right now, with Mo Salah and potential future world-beater Ben Doak, but reinforcements may be necessary if injuries occur or Salah moves on.

Goncalves has been outstanding in that inside-right position for Amorim, this season, with 16 goals and 14 assists in all competitions, across 40 appearances.

The Portugal international could be the perfect backup to Mo Salah, perhaps allowing Doak to go out on loan and gain some valuable senior experience.
