The £73million in value Ralf Rangnick’s 6 Man Utd transfer targets have gained since 2022

It’s fair to say that Ralf Rangnick’s stint as Manchester United boss didn’t go to plan, although he did identify some top transfer targets during his time at the club.

During an interview with BILD, Rangnick namechecked the six players that he wanted the club to sign in 2022.

Using figures provided by Transfermarkt, we have assessed how much those six targets have gained or lost in value since they were first identified by Rangnick in 2022.

Christopher Nkunku (+£8.5million)

Rangnick was well aware of Nkunku’s talents from the time he’d spent at RB Leipzig. Despite his suggestion to sign the French forward, Chelsea managed to beat United to the punch.

While the 26-year-old has been sidelined for the majority of his Chelsea career so far, he has still gained £8.5million in market value since 2022.

Fingers crossed he manages to leave those injury troubles behind him soon.

Josko Gvardiol (+£38million)

Of the six targets that Rangnick identified for United in 2022, Gvardiol has gained the most value since. After going somewhat under the radar during his early RB Leipzig days, the 2022 World Cup properly propelled him into stardom.

Despite being spun by Lionel Messi, Gvardiol had an excellent campaign for Croatia and soon had plenty of Europe’s top clubs sniffing around him.

He did eventually end up in Manchester, but unfortunately for Rangnick, it wasn’t at United. Manchester City spent around £77million on the defender who has gained £38million in market value since 2022.

Luis Diaz (+£25.6million)

Prior to his switch to Liverpool, Rangnick wanted to lure Diaz to Old Trafford. The Colombian winger looked like a real live wire at Porto and it was no surprise that he was being tracked by plenty of top clubs.

Liverpool won the race for his signature in the end and splashed £37.5million on the 27-year-old. Since Rangnick first identified him as a United target, Diaz has gained £25.6million in market value.

Given that the Red Devils instead splashed the big bucks on Antony, you can’t help but feel like they missed a trick by not going for Diaz instead.

Erling Haaland (+£25million)

Alright, Rangnick was no genius for identifying Haaland as a target in 2022 as pretty much every elite club from around Europe was chasing his signature at the time.

However, given Rangnick’s credentials as the previous Red Bull director of football, his knowledge of the Norwegian striker would have been extensive.

As soon as Manchester City announced their interest, it was pretty much game over for everyone else. Since 2022, he’s scored an unprecedented amount of goals and has added £25million to his market value.

Alvaro Morata (-£4million)

While the majority of Rangnick’s targets have gained value since 2022, that isn’t the case for Morata. Despite being in the form of his life right now, his market value has slightly decreased, most likely as a result of his advancing age.

With that being said, the 31-year-old has been superb for Diego Simeone’s side this season. Across all competitions, Morata has scored 19 goals which is far more than any United player has managed.

Dusan Vlahovic (-£20million)

Like Morata, Vlahovic has also seen his market value decrease since 2022. While the Serbian forward hasn’t quite lived up to his potential at Juventus of yet, his scoring numbers have still been fairly consistent.

In 86 games for the Old Lady, Vlahovic has scored 35 goals. During that time his market value has also dwindled by £20million.
