On May 31, 2002, Bruno Metsu’s Senegal stunned the world by beating France at the World Cup.

France entered the competition as champions, and there was talk of Thierry Henry and co. retaining the trophy, but Papa Bouba Diop and Senegal had other plans, downing the French 1-0 in the opening game to help ensure the holders’ elimination.

Senegal, meanwhile, would go on to reaching the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Turkey. Not bad for a side on their World Cup debuts, eh?

It’s fair to say some enjoyed greater success than others, but you might be surprised to hear seven of the eleven played in England…
