Remember Marco Asensio? He’s already made the most brain-melting assist of 2024
The New Year is always welcomed in around the world with dazzling fireworks displays, but Marco Asensio decided he’d trump them all to get 2024 off to a flyer for Paris Saint-Germain.
Not to sound too Peter Kay, but who remembers Asensio? Bursting onto the scene at Real Madrid after signing from Mallorca and becoming one of the game’s most promising young talents, only for injuries to stunt his progress completely.
The game began to pass him by somewhat, but despite eventually recovering some of his best form in the final few years of his time in Madrid, the Spaniard decided to turn his back on Los Blancos and look further afield.
It was a decision that left everyone somewhat gobsmacked. Despite his struggles, Asensio felt tailor-made to be a Madridista. Turning down the chance to stay at possibly the biggest club in the world as he entered his best years was one hell of a risk.
But alas, he stuck by his decision, signed for PSG on a free transfer and hasn’t looked back since swapping Paella for pastries.
Les Parisiens have become the masters at flashy yet largely ineffective transfers, spending unfathomable sums of money to dominate Europe, only to scrape through the Champions League groups every single time before inevitably being dumped out.
However, their hijack of a three-time La Liga and Champions League winner just entering his prime on a free transfer slipped under the radar, and was quietly an exceptional bit of business.
It would’ve been incredibly easy for Asensio to take the paycheque and rest on his laurels in Paris, enjoying the endless patisseries and the high-brow fashion.
But arriving from Madrid with a point to prove, the 27-year-old has kept his head down and quietly been an absolute baller for PSG, tacking on a French flair to his game as he gets to grips with the new country.
While he hasn’t flown out of the traps, Asensio has managed three goals and three assists from 10 games in all competitions, but it’s the absurd nature of his latest assist which has got us off our feet and genuinely fried our brains.
As PSG ran riot in the Coupe de France with a 9-0 win over Revel, Asensio turned up the heat and weighed in with what might already be the assist of 2024.
Marco Asensio’s assist to Kylian Mbappe. ✨🇪🇸🇫🇷
Wow 🤯

Goodness me. Come on, Marco. That’s just rude. The technique is outrageous.
It’s the kind of assist that you try once on a Sunday morning and end up not starting another game for the next month as a result of making such a fool of yourself.
With the ball seamlessly dinked into him, the Spanish international could very reposition himself, take a touch and fire it across the box to Kylian Mbappe, but instead decides to go for the spectacular and fires over an Ibrahimovic-esque backkick.
Not even Shawn Michaels could hit a sweet chin music as impressive as that. Absurd technique from PSG’s new maestro.
Asensio might have flown under the radar so far in the French capital, but he’s just put all eyes on himself with such an outrageous showing of skill – and it looks like he wants that.
Sitting behind Kylian Mbappe in the traditional number 10 role for what remains of the Frenchman’s time in Paris, we might just be witnessing the beginning of a beautiful partnership.
Beautiful on the eye, at least. For defenders across France, Asensio in full stride feeding Mbappe sounds like nightmare fuel.
After a reserved start, Asensio has shown the world what he’s capable of and is now ready to turn up the heat in Paris, one absurd flick at a time.
