17 of the best outside-of-the-boot goals: Carlos, Quaresma, Henry, Pogba
A curler scored with the instep can be immensely satisfying viewing – but there’s something equally special, if not more so, about a goal scored with the outside of the boot.
As we have written on these pages before, giving an outside-foot kick its own name – the trivela – seems a bit much considering its often a ploy used by players who simply don’t like using their weaker foot.
But as this lot proved, the trivela can be a very beautiful thing indeed.

Sometimes fan footage is perfect to capture a goal for everything it is. Beautiful.
Nicklas Bendtner
A strike worthy of a Lord.
Michael Essien
You’ll never get tired of watching this.

No wonder Bobby Robson let him get away with playing the trumpet on the phone.

What is it about Brazil full-backs and outside-of-the-boot goals?

When you’re full of confidence…

This Brazilian centre-back – that’s right centre-back – scored this to rival Diego Maradona for the greatest goal scored in 1986. Swazz.
Thierry Henry
On the night he became Arsenal’s top scorer.
Jay-Jay Okocha
Okocha could score free-kicks he really shouldn’t have been able to score.
Papiss Cisse
Stamford Bridge is still stunned.
