17 things we loved this weekend: Messi, Pep, Bellingham, Sturridge…

Football fans, breathe a sigh of relief. The Premier League is officially back and so is the bulk of our personality as a result.

The 2023-24 season is kicking off around England and Europe this weekend and we’re ready for a campaign filled with drama, goals, glory, despair, pints, more pints, train strikes, and lots of goals from Erling Haaland.

That return has coincided with the business end of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, with remaining nations battling it out for a place in the final on 20 August.

We’ve picked out 17 things that caught our eye for good reason throughout the weekend.

Pep Guardiola

He’s just scored two goals, Pep. Chill out.

Lionel Messi

Causing traffic jams with his majestic footwork. The man can’t stop scoring in Miami.

Jude Bellingham

A goal and a gloriously-baity celebration on his Madrid debut? Bellingham has already made his mark in Spain.

Jurgen Klopp

Providing the first meme of the 2023-24 season.

Daniel Sturridge

A sensational Sky Sports debut from the former England striker.

Roy Hodgson

Don’t mess with Roy. We wouldn’t fancy your chances.

Dani Olmo

Dennis Bergkamp, eat your heart out.

Harry Kane

Already a fan’s favourite at Bayern Munich.

Win

Petition for every Premier League side to be legally required to have their own club dog to love. We’d literally never be angry at a full-time result ever again.

Australia

This is insanely cool.

Alessia Russo

Completed England’s comeback against Colombia and sent them into the Women’s World Cup semi-final with a proper striker’s goal. Can’t beat it.

Gabriel Martinelli

Opening weekend tinged with some much-appreciated Joga Bonito.

Tom Brady

Integrating himself into English culture with ease.

This Newcastle fan

Returning Harvey Barnes’ arrow with grace and style. The Barclays is back, baby.

@meninblazers Harvey Barnes has his arrow returned from an adoring fan 😂 #toonarmy #funnyfootball #newcastleunited ♬ original sound – Men in Blazers

This tackle

Inject this straight into our veins.

Fred Onyedinma

A second yellow for making a card gesture to the ref? That’s tickled our sweet spot…

The football results

A throwback to a less complicated age.
