Comparing Alex Telles’ 2019-20 stats to Man Utd’s current left-backs

After missing out on Sergio Reguilon, Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Porto left-back Alex Telles.

Chances of a deal for Telles appeared slim after negotiations seemed to stall, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that a breakthrough has been reached and the transfer will be completed ahead of Monday’s deadline.

We’ve compared his Primeira Liga stats from 2019-20 to the corresponding Premier League stats for United’s Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.

Goals and assists

Providing a goal threat is always a useful bonus for a left-back and Telles has been incredibly effective in the final third for Porto .

The 27-year-old registered 11 goals and eight assists in the Primeira Liga in 2019-20, averaging a direct goal contribution every 134.6 minutes.

In comparison, Williams scored one goal in 17 league appearances while Shaw failed to register a goal or assist across 1,764 league minutes in 2019-20.

Shots, dribbles, fouls won

It should come as no surprise that Telles had 11 goals in 2019-20 given he made 1.4 shots per 90 minutes in the Primeira Liga.

United’s left-backs were far more hesitant in front of goal with Shaw averaging 0.6 shots per 90 minutes and Williams averaging 0.5.

Williams, however, leads the way when it comes to dribbling, completing 1.4 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 70%.

Shaw follows closely behind with 1.1 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at a completion rate of 68.7%. Telles then finds himself at the bottom of the pile, completing 0.7 per 90 at the lowest success rate (58.3%).

Williams also comes out on top for fouls drawn (1.3 per 90 minutes) ahead of both Telles (0.9) and Shaw (0.5).

Passing

On average, Telles created 2.0 chances per 90 minutes in 2019-20, which is more than Williams (1.2) and Shaw (1.0),

The Brazil international also had a pass completion rate of 80.5%. Shaw comes out on top in this respect, with a pass success rate of 87.4%, marginally higher than Williams 84.6%.

Telles was a lot more prolific in crossing, averaging 2.3 crosses per game, while Shaw registered 0.4 and Williams averaged 0.2.

Defensive contributions

While modern full-backs are expected to support the attacking players, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will still want them to contribute defensively.

Telles made 1.2 tackles per 90 minutes last season but Williams (1.9) and Shaw (1.8) both posted higher averages.

However, the Porto defender does come out on top for interceptions per 90 minutes. His total (2.0) betters Williams (1.3) and Shaw (1.2).

In terms of clearances, Shaw leads the way with 2.6 per 90 minutes in the Premier League. Telles is in second place with 1.4, closely followed by Williams (1.3).
