Comparing Arsenal’s record with and without Mesut Ozil under Unai Emery
Unai Emery’s treatment of Mesut Ozil remains a hot topic among Arsenal fans – but what do the stats suggest about the German’s influence on the team?
Ozil has fallen out of favour under Emery in north London, appearing in just three matches in all competitions so far this season.
We’ve taken a look at Arsenal’s record under Emery when Ozil starts and compared it to the Gunners’ record when he is on the bench or left out of the matchday squad altogether.
With Ozil starting
Played: 31
Won: 17
Drawn: 7
Lost: 7
Goals for: 65
Goals against: 42
Points per game: 1.9
Win rate: 54.8%
Loss rate: 22.6%
Goals per game: 2.1
Goals against per game: 1.5

Without Ozil starting
Played: 37
Won: 23
Drawn: 6
Lost: 8
Goals for: 70
Goals against: 42
Points per game: 2.03
Win rate: 62.2%
Loss rate: 21.6%
Goals per game: 1.9
Goals against per game: 1.1
The stats suggest Emery may actually be justified in his reluctance to use Ozil. Arsenal score fewer goals per game without the playmaker in their side, but they also concede fewer, have a higher win rate and lose fewer games.
As ever, these figures are not definitive as they fail to take into account the quality of the opposition, the standard of Arsenal’s line-up and a myriad of other factors, but they certainly provide food for thought among Gunners fans.
