Comparing Douglas Luiz’s 21-22 stats to Arsenal’s current midfielders

Quick Reads
Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa during their Premier League game against Brentford, Villa Park, August 2021

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, as Mikel Arteta’s side look to strengthen their squad in the middle of the park.

After passing up the opportunity to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon, the Gunners haven’t got long left to find a solution to their midfield woes, but the 23-year-old Brazilian has been linked with a transfer to the Emirates.

Arsenal’s move for another Brazilian, Arthur Melo, seems to have broken down, meaning Luiz is the most realistic option in the January window. Luiz has 18 months left on his contract, meaning Aston Villa might be persuaded into selling.

With Granit Xhaka a walking red card, and Thomas Partey continuing his inability to be available for consecutive games, Luiz could be a welcome addition to an Arsenal side chasing a spot in the top four.

Here’s how his statistics compare to Arsenal’s other midfielders this season.

Note: we haven’t included Elneny due to lack of minutes, but we’ve included Odegaard, Partey, Lokonga and Xhaka from the 2021-22 Premier League campaign so far.
