James Garner of Nottingham Forest celebrates his goal against Blackburn, Ewood Park, February 2022

Comparing James Garner’s 21-22 stats with Man Utd’s midfielders

James Garner is having a stunning season on loan at Nottingham Forest, and the 20-year-old midfielder might be ready to stake a claim in the Manchester United team when he returns.

The young Englishman has shown off his technical ability and in-game intelligence in his 29 appearances this season, and was in the starting XI as Forest knocked Arsenal and Leicester out of the FA Cup in back to back rounds.

With United’s struggles in midfield continuing despite the return of Paul Pogba, many feel that Garner could become a useful option, as his calmness on the ball is a far cry from Fred and Scott McTominay’s chaotic performances in the middle of the park.

As Pogba looks set to depart the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, and Donny Van de Beek’s future more than uncertain, Garner will certainly fancy his chances of regular game time at Old Trafford.

We’ve compared his league stats from this season to United’s other central midfielders.
