Comparing Liverpool’s record with and without Joe Gomez at CB since 2018-19

While Virgil van Dijk often takes the limelight, Joe Gomez has also been responsible for Liverpool’s defensive prowess over the last two seasons.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have partnered Van Dijk with mixed success, but Jurgen Klopp’s side look a lot stronger with Gomez in the team.

We’ve taken a closer look at Liverpool’s Premier League record with and without the England international starting at centre-back since the start of the 2018-19 season.

With Gomez starting at CB

Games: 22
Wins: 20
Draws: 2
Losses: 0

Win rate: 90.9%
Loss rate: 0%

Points per game: 2.72
Goals conceded per game: 0.4
Clean sheet ratio: 63.6%

Without Gomez starting at CB

Games: 43
Wins: 35
Draws: 6
Losses: 2

Win rate: 81.4%
Loss rate: 4.7%

Points per game: 2.58
Goals conceded per game: 0.7
Clean sheet ratio: 39.5%

As you can see, Liverpool have been in incredible form over the last two seasons but their record is even better when Gomez is in the team.

Their win rate and points per game are higher when Gomez starts compared to when he isn’t in the starting line-up, and he hasn’t lost a Premier League game in over two years.

It is also notable that Liverpool concede fewer goals per game and keep clean sheets on a fairly regular basis when Gomez plays from the start.
