Comparing Mason Greenwood’s debut season at Man Utd to Wayne Rooney’s

Mason Greenwood is enjoying an incredible debut season at Manchester United, following in the footsteps of iconic figures like Wayne Rooney

Greenwood progressed through the youth ranks at Old Trafford while United spent £27million to sign Rooney from Everton in 2004.

Rooney, who opened his spell at the club with a hat-trick, would go on to score a record-setting 253 goals across his 13 years in Manchester.

We’ve compared the 18-year-old’s stats in all competitions in 2019-20 to Rooney’s stats during his first season at Old Trafford.

As the stats show, Rooney played a much more prominent role in his debut season at United while Greenwood was eased into the first team by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The forwards both scored 17 goals in all competitions in their debut seasons, but Greenwood can still add to that tally in the Europa League.

Greenwood is also providing a direct goal contribution for United on a more regular basis than Rooney achieved in 2004-05.
