Comparing Wout Weghorst’s 2022-23 stats to Man Utd’s current strikers
Manchester United have been scouring the transfer market for attacking reinforcements and are seemingly on the verge of signing Burnley and Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season – but how do his stats stack up against United’s current strikers?
Weghorst, who scored twice against Argentina in last month’s World Cup, is currently on loan for the season at Turkish club Besiktas but could cut it short after emerging as an option for United boss Erik Ten Hag.
United have been exploring a number of loan possibilities this month with their January finances limited due to the willingness of the Glazer family to sell the club in the coming months.
However, they have been struggling to find the right target with most favoured options only available on permanent transfers.
A move for Weghorst would certainly be intriguing. The tall striker signed for Burnley from Wolfsburg for £12million last January and impressed not long after in a 1-1 draw against United, laying on the equaliser for Jay Rodriguez.
But he struggled to make a greater impact as the season drew on, scoring just twice as Burnley were relegated from the Premier League.
Prior to his move to Turf Moor, he had an impressive goalscoring ratio of almost one every two games; Weghorst played 144 games for Wolfsburg and scored 77 goals.
And the prospect of playing at Old Trafford could be enough to convince the 30-year-old to give English football a second try.
