Comparing Diego Carlos’ 2021-22 stats to Newcastle’s centre-backs

Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos has been the subject of heavy interest from Newcastle in the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old Brazilian centre-back, who won the Europa League in 2020, has been a crucial player for the Spanish side, who currently sit second in La Liga, and will not come cheaply.

Signed from FC Nantes in 2019, Carlos has formed a rock-solid partnership with Jules Kounde under Julen Lopetegui, who would be unwilling to break up his backline whilst a potential title challenge is on the cards.

Carlos is reportedly eager to join the new money project at St James Park, whilst Eddie Howe’s side continue to negotiate a price in excess of £30million.

Newcastle are desperate for some defensive quality to try and avoid relegation, and Carlos can bring exactly that.

Here’s how the Brazilian’s stats from La Liga in 2021-22 stack up against the corresponding Premier League output of Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez.
