Ranking every current Prem club by net spend over last five years: LFC sixth

Money has become an increasingly important factor in modern football – but which Premier League clubs have been the biggest spenders?

The always brilliant football finance expert Swiss Ramble has ranked the 20 current Premier League clubs by their net spend between 2015-16 and 2019-20, up to when club’s accounts have been made available.

Manchester City and Manchester United have been by far the biggest spenders but City at least have two league titles in that time to show for it.

Despite spending less than Merseyside rivals Everton, Liverpool are the only team to win both the Premier League and the Champions League during this five year period.

Chelsea are surprisingly in fifth place, although it should be noted that these figures don’t include their £225million outlet in the summer of 2020.

Mauricio Pochettino may not have won a trophy with Tottenham but this table underlines how he worked wonders on a shoestring budget.

The likes of Leicester City and Leeds United have also been punching above their weight, proving that teams don’t always need ridiculous amounts of money to be successful.

1. Man City – £704m
2. Man Utd – £655m
