Five quotes on Spurs-bound Sergio Reguilon: ‘Grown at a barbaric rate’
Sergio Reguilon is set to join Tottenham from Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho continues to stamp his mark on the squad.
Reguilon spent last season on loan at Sevilla and was named the best left-back in La Liga for his performances.
We’ve taken a closer look at what some of those to work closest with the Spain international to see what he might add to the Spurs team.
Julen Lopetegui
Speaking after guiding Sevilla to another Europa League title, Lopetegui said: “Reguilon has grown at a barbaric rate. He’s a much more complete player than when he first joined.”
‘Simpleton’
In a piece published in Marca in 2019 after Reguilon had displaced Marcelo at Real Madrid, one of the left-back’s former team-mates at UD Logrones said: “When he arrived we laughed at him because he seemed like a bit of a simpleton.
“Now he sends us boots and tickets, after displacing the best left-back of the last decade.”
Another unnamed player added: “Instead of giving us coffee, yoghurts and biscuits like everyone else, Sergio gave us good ham, prawns and a bit of wine. A gourmet – maybe that’s why he’s now at Madrid and the rest of us are in Segunda B.”

Santiago Solari
“[Reguilon] is an example to all the players in the youth academy. He shows that if you fight for it, and have quality, then there is a possibility of getting a place in the Real Madrid squad.”
Glenn Hoddle
Speaking to BT Sport in August 2020, Hoddle said: “He loves to get forward but he’ll be asked a few questions defensively. He looks a good prospect, a lot of clubs are looking at him now as well. Obviously he’s not the finished article yet but he’s full of confidence.
“He likes to get forward like all full-backs do, really, in world football at the moment. He’s got a lovely, lovely left foot and he’s so confident in the final third running at people.”
Julen Lopetegui
Sergio Reguilon
“It is clear that this is a dream, and I am going to hang on to it for as long as I can.”
