How Lukaku’s 19-20 stats at Inter compare to his final season at Man Utd

Romelu Lukaku endured a difficult final season at Manchester United, but the striker has rediscovered his best form since joining Inter Milan for £74million in 2019.

Lukaku has enjoyed – and it still enjoying – a brilliant debut season at the San Siro, helping Antonio Conte’s side reach the Europa League final, becoming the first player to score in 10 consecutive games in the competition, after finishing second in Serie A.

We’ve taken a closer look at his stats in Italy and compared them to his final season in England.

Goals and assists

Lukaku has been in excellent form in 2019-20, recording 33 goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions – an average of a goal or assist every 105.1 minutes.

That means the striker has more than doubled his combined goals and assists tally from 2018-19 in just five more appearances.

He scored 15 goals and provided four assists in his final season at United, when he directly contributed to a goal at an average of one every 157.9 minutes.

Attacking impact

Despite only registering two assists in Serie A in 2019-20, Lukaku still averaged 1.6 chances created per 90 minutes.

This is a marked improvement on his figures at United in 2018-19, where he averaged 0.9 chances created per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

The Belgium international also completed 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A at a success rate of 54.5%. In comparison, he managed 0.9 at United but at a lower success rate of 47%.

Lukaku’s passing accuracy has slightly improved at the San Siro, completing 70.7% of his passes in Serie A compared to 66.3% in the Premier League in 2018-19.

The 27-year-old is also taking marginally fewer unsuccessful touches (2.1 per 90 vs 2.2) but is dispossessed slightly more frequently (2.0 times per 90 vs 1.9) in Serie A.

He was often used as a target man at Old Trafford and won 3.9 aerial battles per 90 minutes in 2018-19 at a success rate of 52%.

But in Serie A, Lukaku is now attempting less aerial battles, winning 2.8 per 90 minutes, at a higher success rate of 56%.

Defensive contributions

Lukaku’s work rate was criticised at Old Trafford, where he averaged 0.3 tackles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 42.9% and 0.1 interceptions per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

While he’s only made one interception in Serie A, under Antonio Conte he now averages 0.4 tackles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 66.6%.
