Comparing Rangnick’s first 10 Man Utd games with Solskjaer’s last 10

Since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, interim manager Ralf Rangnick has been making some steady improvements.

Solskjaer was sacked after losing 4-1 to Watford in November 2021 and left United seventh in the Premier League, six points behind West Ham in the final Champions League spot.

Rangnick then steadied the ship, overseeing tight 1-0 wins over Crystal Palace and Norwich in the Premier League and a 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the Champions League.

His work was delayed by a coronavirus outbreak at Carrington and United dropped seven points out of a possible 12 from games against Newcastle, Burnley, Wolves and Aston Villa.

But they are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup and are now back in the top four after consecutive wins over Brentford and West Ham.

We’ve taken a look at Rangnick’s record after 10 United games and compared it to Solskjaer’s last 10 in the dugout. Note: we’ve not included the three games that Michael Carrick took charge of.

As the stats show, United are averaging an extra point per game with Rangnick in charge and their win rate has doubled to 60%.

Their loss rate has also dropped by 40% but the one similarity between the end of Solskjaer’s tenure and the start of Rangnick’s is United’s goals per game average.

But the German prioritised fixing United’s defence and they have certainly tightened up at the back, conceding 15 goals fewer than they did in Solskjaer’s last 10 games.
