Seven of the most ridiculous players linked with Man Utd during lockdown

Quick Reads

Never shy of spending a few quid, Manchester United continue to be regularly linked with big-money transfers.

The football season may have been postponed in recent weeks, but the transfer rumour mill is as busy as ever as companies try and generate more clicks and views.

We’ve looked at seven of the most ridiculous transfer rumours about United since lockdown began.

Angel Di Maria

According to claims from Calciomercato, PSG have offered Angel Di Maria as part of a swap deal for Paul Pogba.

The winger scored just three league goals in an ill-fated spell at Old Trafford during the 2014-15 season before being sold to the French side for £44million.

Di Maria reportedly turns the channel over when his former side are on TV and his wife definitely wouldn’t be keen on a return to Manchester.

“I said to him, ‘Go to any country – except England!’” Jorgelina Cardoso told Los Angeles de la Manana in May 2020.

“Anyway, one year later and there we were in England and it was horrible, a s**thole. I didn’t like anything about it, not a thing.

“The women are all skinny, prim and proper… weird. You’re walking down the street and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you or what.

“The food’s disgusting. All the girls are all dolled up to the nines, perfectly made-up and there’s me with my hair in a bun and with no make-up on.”

We think it’s fair to say that this deal won’t be happening.

Cristiano Ronaldo

While we’re on the subject of former Manchester United players…

It’s been 11 years since Ronaldo left Old Trafford and the forward has always left the door open to a possible return.

According to a report from Marca, Juventus are starting to struggle financially due to the coronavirus outbreak and may have to sell their prize asset in the summer.

United and PSG are said to be the only two possible destinations for Ronaldo due to his astronomical wages.

But the 35-year-old still has unfinished business in Italy and is unlikely to drop down into the Europa League anytime soon.

James Rodriquez

Rodriquez joined Real Madrid on the back of his impressive performances in the 2014 World Cup but has failed to live up to their expectations.

AS report that Old Trafford officials have already held discussions with super agent Jorge Mendes and Rodriquez could be used in a potential swap deal for Pogba.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has changed the club’s transfer strategy and they are now targeting talented young players rather than big name marquee signings.

Nelson Semedo

Catalan publication Sport suggest that United have approached Barcelona over a potential move for Semedo in the summer transfer window.

That seems unlikely as the club are well-stocked at right-back, with big things expected of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot over the coming years.

Joao Felix

Atletico Madrid spent £113million to sign Felix from Benfica last summer, but he has scored just four league goals in 20 appearances this season.

According to LeSport10, United are interested in the Portuguese attacker and want him to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo.

Aside from the fact we’re unsure why a French publication has the inside track on an English club wanting a Portuguese player in Spain, Felix is under contact until the summer of 2026 and Atleti are unlikely to sell their club record signing after just 12 months.

Philippe Coutinho

Coutinho has been deemed surplus to requirements at Barcelona and United have made an enquiry over his availability, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Brazilian spent five years at Liverpool and would probably reject a move to Old Trafford out of loyalty to his former club.

Bruno Fernandes’ arrival would also suggest that United have already filed the creative role that Coutinho could occupy.

Timo Werner

Werner has become one of the hottest properties in Europe this season, scoring 27 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions for RB Leipzig.

Sport Bild report that United have been in contact with the player’s agent but the striker is still waiting on an offer from Liverpool, who he has regularly flirted with over the last few years.

“I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world,” Werner told Norwegian TV channel Viasport Football in February 2020.

“When you’re linked with that team it makes me very proud. It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool have a lot of good players and I have to improve myself, to learn much more things to get on this level to play there.”

We can’t see United wanting to sign a player who would seemingly prefer to join their fierce rivals.
