Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) looks on during Manchester City and FC Copenhagen

The six teams with the most wins over Guardiola: Tottenham, Liverpool…

Pep Guardiola is undoubtedly one of the greatest managers of all time, although some clubs have managed to get some joy when facing the Manchester City boss.

Throughout his illustrious career, Guardiola has managed 884 matches and he manages to boast an insane win percentage of 72.62 per cent. For context, that’s a higher win percentage than the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho.

With City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Guardiola has won a total of 36 trophies as a manager and he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down any time soon.

We’ve taken a closer look at Guardiola’s managerial record and have found the six teams with the most wins over the Spanish boss throughout his career.

6. Real Madrid – 5 losses

El Clasico was arguably at its most fierce when Guardiola was up against Mourinho in the dugout. Guardiola tended to boss this fixture as he only lost two games against Real Madrid while he was in Spain.

Perhaps the most painful loss for Guardiola was the 2010-11 Copa Del Ray final as Real Madrid stopped Barcelona from winning the quadruple with a 1-0 triumph in the final.

The remaining three losses for Guardiola against Real Madrid came during his spells with Bayern Munich and Man City in the Champions League semi-finals.

However, Guardiola did manage to get one over on Real Madrid last season as Man City beat them in their route to the final. In total, Guardiola has faced Real Madrid 23 times, winning 13, drawing five and losing five.

5. Arsenal – 6 losses

Guardiola’s first defeat against Arsenal came in 2011 as the Gunners beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League last 16. Barcelona did turn the fixture around in the second leg, but it was a memorable result nonetheless.

Arsenal are now seen as one of Man City’s biggest title rivals and while they have got the better of Guardiola on six occasions, it is often the Man City boss who comes out on top.

In total, Guardiola has won 20 games against Arsenal and he’s managed to average 2.17 points per game in this fixture. Mikel Arteta will be hoping to get one over on his former boss next year.

=3. Tottenham – 7 losses

Throughout Guardiola’s time in the Premier League, Tottenham have been seen as somewhat of a bogey side. Spurs managed to crash Man City’s Champions League hopes in 2018-19 and they’ve taken some big scalps in the league too.

Even Guardiola has joked about his record against Tottenham. When asked what he has left to achieve after winning the treble, he jokingly replied: “Score a goal against Spurs away. It’s why I stay, I want to beat Spurs away.”

Despite Guardiola joining in with the fun, he has actually won more games against Tottenham than he has lost. In 17 fixtures, Guardiola has won eight, drawn two and lost seven.

=3. Man Utd – 7 losses

Guardiola managed to beat United in two Champions League finals with Barcelona, but the Red Devils have managed to get the better of his City side on multiple occasions.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemed to have a knack against Guardiola as he beat the City boss on four occasions. Still, Guardiola does maintain the superior record against United, with 14 wins himself.

=1. Liverpool – 8 losses

Of the six teams in this list, Liverpool are the only side with more wins over Guardiola than he has over them. The battle between Guardiola and Klopp over the years has been legendary, to say the least.

Despite Man City often coming out on top in the league, Liverpool actually boasts the superior head-to-head record. In the 21 meetings between Guardiola and Liverpool, he has won seven, drawn six and lost eight.

=1. Chelsea – 8 losses

Along with Liverpool, Chelsea also boast 8 triumphs over Guardiola. Domestically, Guardiola has always often had the edge on Chelsea, but Europe is a different story.

Chelsea dumped Guardiola’s Barcelona out of the Champions League in 2011-12 and they also came up trumps against City in the final in 2020-21.

Coincidentally, Chelsea’s triumph in the Champions League final was the last time they beat Guardiola, but what a night it was. Overall, Guardiola has won 14 games against Chelsea, drawn four and lost eight.
