10 brilliant stats from Tottenham’s 5-2 statement thrashing of Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min celebrates scoring their side's fourth goal of the game with team-mate James Maddison (right) during the Premier League match at Turf Moor, Burnley.

Life under Ange Postecoglu continues to look sweet for Tottenham, who came from behind to demolish Burnley at Turf Moor thanks to an inspired display from Son Heung-min.

Questions were asked of Spurs and how they’d cope after losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich late in the transfer window, but Postecoglu and his side have had an answer every time thus far in the Premier League. A brilliant win against Manchester United has been followed up with victory away to Bournemouth, and an early Carabao Cup exit was avenged away to Burnley.

Son ran riot and bagged a hat-trick for Tottenham who continue to begrudgingly become every football hipster’s favourite team, if not for himself and James Maddison cooking, then for big Ange being a delight every week.

Lyle Foster’s opener for the Clarets after just four minutes ought to have panicked Spurs, but it took them just 12 minutes to pull back level before racing into their eventual 5-1 lead. Josh Brownhill was able to add a late consolation for Burnley, but Ange-ball had already run wild on the Premier League once again.

It’s becoming a regular occurrence, this. The Australian has completely transformed them from the side we saw last season, and you can’t help but be happy for him.

But after the match, he was keen to put all the praise onto the ‘outstanding’ South Korean: “He’s been an outstanding leader, with the way he presents himself every day in training.

“He led our press today – and then he has the quality to take his chances. I’m really pleased for him.”

Their thrashing of Vincent Kompany’s Clarets was a statement win heading into the international break. Here are ten stats that display just how good a three points it was.

– Son Heung-min scored his fourth Premier League hat-trick, with each coming at different venues (St. Mary’s v Southampton, Sep 2020, Villa Park v Aston Villa, Apr 2022, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium v Leicester, Sep 2022, Turf Moor v Burnley, Sep 2023) – via @OptaJoe.

– Since his first season in the Premier League (2018-19), no player has scored more goals from outside the box in the competition than James Maddison (18, level with James Ward-Prowse) – via @OptaJoe.

– James Maddison is now the midfielder with the joint-most goals and assists in the Premier League (23) since the start of last season, alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Martin Odegaard. Incredibly good company.

– Only 30 players in the history of the competition have now scored more Premier League goals than Son Heung-min (106) – via @Squawka.

–  Tottenham Hotspur now have lost just two of their last 18 matches against Burnley (12 wins, 4 draws).

– All three of Cristian Romero’s Premier League goals for Spurs have come against sides beginning with the letter B (Brighton, Brentford, Burnley).

– Son Heung-min (104) has now scored more Premier League goals than Cristiano Ronaldo (103).

– Cristian Romero has scored more league goals (2) in four games this season than he did in his first two seasons as a Spurs player (1).

– Ange Postecoglu becomes only the fourth Spurs manager to pick up ten points from their opening four matches in charge of the club.

– The win was Tottenham’s biggest away victory since they beat Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford in October 2020.
