Can you name Barcelona’s XI from Gerard Pique’s debut in 2008?
After four years at Manchester United, Gerard Pique decided to return to boyhood club Barcelona in the summer of 2008.
Pique, who came through the famous La Masia academy, initially left Spain at the age of 17 and was snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
But he struggled to break up the incredible centre-back partnership between Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, making just 23 first-team appearances before returning to Camp Nou in a £5million deal.
“I am very happy to be back, I didn’t think I would be here again but this is very good for me,” Pique said after signing for Barcelona.
“Manchester United is a great club and I enjoyed winning things. To play with world-class players has helped me and now I want to continue this at Barca.”
The defender then made his debut for the club in a Champions League qualifier against Wisla Krakow, coming off the bench in the 75th minute.
He since went on to become one of the most decorated players in Barcelona’s history, winning eight La Liga titles, seven Copa del Reys and three Champions Leagues. He announced his retirement earlier this season at the age of 36, but it looks as though he’ll pick up yet another winners’ medal for his contributions to their 2022-23 La Liga campaign.
But we’re asking you to name that starting XI that Pep Guardiola chose for that 4-0 win over Wislka Krakow in August 2008.
If this puts you in the mood for another challenge, why not have a go at naming the top La Liga goalscorer for every season since 1990.
