Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany watches the ball during the Barclays Premier League game against Aston Villa. City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester. 4 March 2009.

Can you name Man City’s XI from Vincent Kompany’s debut in 2008?

Vincent Kompany made the first of his 360 Manchester City appearances on 24 August 2008 as part of a City side that beat West Ham 3-0. We want to know how well you remember the occasion.

Kompany was Manchester City’s final signing of the pre-Abu Dhabi glory era – and what a signing he turned out to be.

After arriving for £7.65million, Kompany started out his City career as a midfielder. But he was later moved back into central defence and it proved to be a masterstroke.

The big Belgian became City’s leader and captain, a stalwart of by far the most successful era in the club’s history.

During those 360 games, Kompany helped City to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.

He made himself a hero not just for his performances on the pitch – and the odd spectacular goal – but for the way he carried himself and pushed the team on through difficult moments.

Here, though, we don’t want you to think about the glory years that followed Kompany’s arrival. Instead, we want you to cast your mind back to his very first game in sky blue.

It was a very, very different time at City and the team that Mark Hughes sent out to face West Ham in the second game of the 2008-09 Premier League season reflects that.

Still, City cruised to a 3-0 win with three second-half goals – two from a young English academy graduate and another from a Brazilian import.
