Can you name Man Utd’s XI from the 2011 Champions League final?

On the 28th May 2011, Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat in the Champions League final to Pep Guardiola’s era-defining Barcelona at Wembley. Can you remember their starting XI from that famous night?

That Barcelona team were undoubtedly one of the greatest sides in history. It was the second time in three years that they’d triumphed over Sir Alex Ferguson’s United on the biggest stage in European football.

But it should not be forgotten that the runners-up were an exceptional side too. They were playing in their third Champions League final in four years and were the champions of England, having claimed a fourth Premier League title in five years.

Barcelona’s performance at Wembley is remembered as one of their very best and Ferguson was magnanimous in defeat.

“They’re the best in Europe, no question about that,” the legendary United boss responded.

“In my time as a manager, I would say they’re the best team we’ve faced. Everyone acknowledges that and I accept that.

“It’s not easy when you’ve been well beaten like that to think another way. No one has given us a hiding like that. It’s a great moment for them. They deserve it because they play the right way and enjoy their football.”

Each of Barcelona’s iconic midfield trio notched an assist and each of their forwards – Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro – got on the scoresheet. You’ll probably remember the brilliant striker that got United on level terms midway through the first half, but what about the rest of the starting XI Ferguson went with?
