Can you name Rangers’ last Champions League XI from 2010?
Rangers are back in the Champions League for the first time in over a decade. Can you remember the last Rangers team played in the competition, all the way back in 2010?
We’re asking you to name the starting XI that legendary Rangers manager Walter Smith went with for their final group stage game away to Bursaspor, a 1-1 draw against the Turkish Super Lig outfit.
The occasion marked something of a low-key exit from Europe’s most prestigious cup competition. Smith insisted the match wasn’t a dead rubber, due to money and seeding implications, but Rangers went into the match out of the Champions League, guaranteed third place and a drop into the Europa League.
The Scottish giants opened the Champions League group stage campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw away to Manchester United, who would go on to reach the final that season, followed by a 1-0 victory over Bursaspor at Ibrox.
But they failed to win their next three, taking just one point from two matches against Valencia, and suffering elimination after a 1-0 home defeat to United.
Their team for the final group stage outing was a mix of experienced players and lesser-known youngsters.
“It is a big ask of them all,” boss Walter Smith said of a couple of teenagers who were given opportunities that night due to injuries suffered by more established first-teamers. “We hope they can take advantage of the experience they are gaining.”
Rangers’ striker opened the scoring with a sweetly-struck left-footed effort in the opening stages, but the hosts got back into the contest and made their pressure count, equalising through Sercan Yildirim in the 78th minute. It was the first point that Bursaspor had picked up in the group, having lost their opening five matches.
The time from the office to beat is 04:12. Once you’ve tried that, why not try your hand at recalling the Rangers’ XI from the 2008 UEFA Cup final vs Zenit?
