Levi Colwill of Chelsea

Chelsea’s Levi Colwill is the ultimate defensive playmaker; his laser-guided passes are ridiculous

The modern-day defender needs to be competent in all aspects of the game and luckily for Chelsea, Levi Colwill is a player who manages to thrive in almost all areas.

Colwill himself is in the midst of a transfer saga right now. Chelsea are haggling for a deal with Moises Caicedo and there’s even been the suggestion that Colwill could be used in a potential swap deal.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi would sure like to have the Chelsea defender back next season. “There are two questions. Not only about Caicedo, also about Colwill, and maybe it can be [a swap],” the Brighton boss told reporters ahead of their pre-season tour.

Chelsea know all too well about letting upcoming stars slip through their fingertips and surely they will be cautious to avoid the same fate when it comes to Colwill.

The 20-year-old looks like a Rolls-Royce of a defender after impressing on loan with Huddersfield and Brighton. His latest showing in pre-season shows just what he is all about.

Brighton know all about Colwill’s skills and they are still foolish enough to leave him with acres of space to pick out a sensational defence-splitting long ball.

The missile of a pass is weighted to perfection and catches almost everyone off guard. The thought of Colwill pulling off that sort of pass on the regular next season already has us drooling.

While there has been plenty of talk over the defender’s future, Mauricio Pochettino is in no doubt that he has a place in his plans at Stamford Bridge.

“We don’t need to show nothing and make a statement about us. He is our player and he is going to be with us,” Pochettino told reporters.

“I am happy with him, his performance was good. Better than what I expect because it is one of the first games he has. I think he can be one of the greatest centre-backs in England.

“It is clear his situation, and there is nothing to say. He is our player and we are happy with him and he is going to be part of our team.”

Considering Wesley Fofana will be out for the foreseeable future with an ACL injury, Colwill will surely get his chance to impress under Pochettino.

The Chelsea defender is already scarily good for his age and who knows how good he could go on to become. With a cannon of a left foot and excellent defensive awareness, the sky really is the limit for him right now.

Liverpool have been another club sniffing around the 20-year-old of late, but surely Chelsea have learned from their previous mistakes by now? Stars don’t have to be purchased, they can be developed and that’s exactly where Colwill fits in right now.
