Forget Mesut Ozil, Arsenal have their new pre-assist king on loan at Swindon

With Mesut Ozil in exile, Arsenal are desperate for some midfield creativity. Luckily, one of their young loanees has demonstrated this very quality at Swindon Town.

In between trolling teenage boys on Fortnite and offering to fund Gunnarsaraus, it can be forgotten that Ozil was once the creative heartbeat of the Arsenal team. He may have been flakier than a certain Cadburys product in away games, but the German World Cup winner became the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League assists in 2018.

With the ability to spot passes beyond the comprehension of your typical midfielder, it’s safe to say Arsenal are missing his creative output. Happily for Mikel Arteta, the solution may be closer to home than first thought.

Matt Smith has already caught his manager’s eye. The 20-year-old was called into the Arsenal first team after Project Restart and was named on the bench for all their summer matches – picking up an FA Cup winner’s medal despite the fact he’s yet to actually make his competitive debut for the club.

This season Smith has been on loan at League One side Swindon Town. Resisting the temptations of local cider, Smith has caught the eye with his performances in the West Country and scored on his league debut in September 2020.

Now, Arsenal fans are salivating after this pre-assist during an FA Cup defeat to Darlington. Receiving the ball in the opposition half, Smith threaded the ball through the eye of the proverbial needle to dissect the Darlington defence.

Joel Grant had the easy task of squaring to Brett Pitman to equalise, but the goal was chiefly made through Smith’s vision. No wonder plenty of Arsenal fans got very excited on Twitter.

With the future looking like this, who needs Mesut Ozil? He’d be cheaper, for a start…
