Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (BVB) Borussia Dortmund - Hertha BSC Berlin 19.02.2023

Borussia Dortmund have done it again with another English wonderkid – & Arsenal have fallen in love

Borussia Dortmund’s eye for talent never seems to waver, and the trajectory of a certain winger they signed from Manchester City’s youth ranks is testament to that.

If The Black and Yellows were a professional wrestler, they’d be incredibly over with the fans.

Cool attire, always the underdog and continually championing everything pure about the sport. But the crucial step? Never actually winning when it matters most.

There have been plenty of brilliant wrestlers who simply never make it to the promised land – or haven’t done so enough – and it feels like Dortmund excel at that, no matter how many obscene talents they spot, nurture and help blossom.

That’s because they’re continually picked apart every time they build a team around these young stars, the minute they show any signs of being world-class.

It happened with Jadon Sancho, then it happened with Jude Bellingham and  – if reports in Germany are to be believed – it could be about to happen with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.

Fortunately but also somewhat unfortunately for Dortmund, the investment they made into a rather promising young winger from Manchester City’s youth academy in 2020 appears to have paid dividends – Bynoe-Gittens looks really, really bloody good.

So good that Dortmund have rewarded the 19-year-old with a contract extension through 2028, following a strong start to his second full season with their first team, after a promising 2022-23 was hampered by injuries.

Thing is, that new deal hasn’t done much in deterring interest from Arsenal, who are said to be leading the race to sign the teenager.

After he ripped apart the UEFA Youth League with five goals in four games in 2021-22, an ascent into the senior setup felt inevitable.

Despite the injuries, Bynoe-Gittens did enough to leave people’s jaws on the floor regularly and now continues to produce displays that’ll have you in awe to the point where that sweet, sweet cheap pint you were allowed to bring to your seat has now hit the concrete in shock.

So, what exactly is the winger all about? Feast your eyes on this complete joke of an assist from 2022-23 and you’ll find out.

Eighteen years old at that point. In his first full season with the big boys. He’s got some serious stones, that’s for sure.

The best wingers have to be fearless, but to have that at such a young age, along with the ability to actually glide past seasoned professionals before picking out the key pass? Dortmund have absolutely done it again.

Picking the ball up deep, Bynoe-Gittens combines a silky gait and exceptionally close control with a supreme ability to ride challenges and pressure from others, taking the ball into a packed area before slotting through Julian Brandt with a perfectly weighted pass.

There’s of course a lot of developing to do, but should Arsenal be able to snap up the teenager, they’d be rubbing their hands at the prospect of putting him on the path to greatness.

When you think about what Mikel Arteta is achieving at Arsenal with a crop of talented youngsters, the stars immediately align.

Bringing London boy Bynoe-Gittens home, with one middle finger up at City and another up at Chelsea – who he played for before heading up north – would be the ultimate coup.
