Watch: Ferguson gives his take on Ten Hag & ‘what Man Utd need’
Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated how Erik ten Hag must grab control to succeed in the Old Trafford dugout.
The current Ajax boss will make the switch to the Premier League giants this summer to take over the reins from Ralf Rangnick who is expected to move into a consultancy role at the club – although recent reports suggest the German could be in line for the Austria job.
Ten Hag becomes the fifth permanent manager that the Red Devils have appointed since Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012-13 season following a trophy-laden stay.
In the seasons that have followed, a club that was utterly dominant in English football has lost its way.
United’s last trophy came in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and in the 2021-22 campaign they’ve looked further away from returning to the glory days than ever before.
With a month of the season to play, United look certain to miss out on a Champions League finish in the league despite many tipping them to mount a title challenge in August.
It’s some rebuild job that the Dutchman has on his hands. With Liverpool and Manchester City at the peak of their powers under the stewardship of two world-class leaders – Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola – Ten Hag will undoubtedly need time to imprint his ideas.
Speaking at the Punchestown horse racing festival, Fergie had his say on the new man in charge, telling RTE Racing: “I hope he does well [Ten Hag], because the club needs someone to get in control – I hope he does well yeah.”
Someone has to be the right fit to restore the United dominance that we saw year on year under Ferguson.
They’ll be hoping this is finally the man who can turn fortunes around.
