Watch: Fabrizio Romano has breaking news on Antony transfer

Manchester United’s pursuit of Ajax forward Antony has been one of the defining stories of the summer transfer window and Fabrizio Romano has huge breaking news about the prospective deal.

United have been looking frantically for reinforcements in an effort to rebuild their squad following a hugely disappointing 2021-22 campaign.

New manager Erik ten Hag has managed to add Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro to his squad but United are still short of forward options.

Cristiano Ronaldo has spent the entire window trying to leave Old Trafford, while Ten Hag was forced to field Eriksen as a false 9 during their opening weekend defeat against Brighton.

It is no secret that their number-one target is 22-year-old Brazil international Antony, with whom Ten Hag enjoyed great success at Ajax.

And, in a sensational interview with the Italian journalist last week, Romano quoted Antony as having told him: “Since February of this year, my agents came to Amsterdam to inform Ajax of my desire to leave the club to face a new challenge and that some interested clubs would arrive, and with them a great offer.

“In June of this summer, I interrupted my vacation and came personally to inform the managers of Ajax, including the new coach, of my wish to leave and that they should consider this possibility because when I started in Amsterdam, it was a project for two seasons.

“And during the window months, meetings concluded, including a proposal from Ajax for a contract renewal. I made it clear once again – I want to leave the club.”

United had a €90million bid rejected on Friday afternoon but Romano has revealed that negotiations have progressed significantly within the last 48 hours.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “Important, important breakthrough in the talks between Manchester United and Ajax for Antony on Sunday morning.

“We can say the deal is now imminent. Manchester United are closing in on this deal for the Brazilian star wanted by Erik ten Hag – and Antony really wanted to join Man United.

“In his interview with me on Friday he was really clear that he wanted to go, he didn’t want to stay at Ajax and that it was only Man United for Antony.

“But, important point on Sunday morning. After further contact between Manchester United and Ajax on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and after three days where negotiations were complicated, Ajax decided to open on a value of €100million for Antony.

“So, the two clubs are now in direct contact to find a full agreement on the structure on the fee, and structure of the add-ons, to get the deal over the line.

“The ‘here we go’ is probably coming very soon for Antony, we’re just waiting on the final steps on the deal. Manchester United and Ajax are working to complete the final details of the Antony deal.”
