Watch: Journalist provides key update on Man Utd’s Antony pursuit
After raiding former club Ajax for Lisandro Martinez, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is now trying to sign Antony from the Dutch side.
Antony was a mainstay in Ten Hag’s Ajax side last season, registering 12 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances in all competitions.
The Brazil international is regarded as one of the best players in the Eredivisie and has been tipped to shine on a bigger stage.
“Antony can do wonders at Manchester United and the World Cup. He enjoyed a fantastic 2021-22 season and I’m sure he attracted the attention of bigger clubs,” Rivaldo told Betfair.
“At the moment, Manchester United – who have his former manager Erik ten Hag – seems to be the closest club to signing him and I’m confident we’ll all enjoy watching him play at Old Trafford.”
The Red Devils had reportedly cooled their interest in the winger after being informed of Ajax’s €80million valuation.
They’ve already spent £60million this summer and are seemingly prioritising a move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, who will cost around £65million.
But talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook insists that the Antony deal is still on and could happen before the end of the transfer window.
“There have been a lot of reports that Manchester United’s interest in him is over,” Crook said on talkSPORT. “I was under the impression last week that he would only be a target if Cristiano Ronaldo was to leave.
“That may not be the case because I’ve had some information from a very reliable source that Manchester United are still very much looking to bring Antony to the Premier League.
“Ten Hag is a big admirer of his qualities and feels he can add something to his Manchester United rebuild.”
🔚 “There’d been reports that Utd’s interest in Antony was over.”
🙏 “But Man United are still very much looking to bring him to the PL.”
💶 “A €70m fee has been [reported], I think it’ll be a little less.”
