Watch: Ben White stops certain goal with absolutely heroic block

Arsenal defender Ben White produced an absolutely spectacular block to help his side keep a clean sheet in Sunday afternoon’s 5-0 demolition of Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners made short work of Steve Cooper’s newly-promoted side, kicking things up a gear after the break with four second-half goals.

But they were close to being pegged back after Gabriel Martinelli’s early opener.

Jesse Lingard was gifted a golden opportunity to open his account for Forest, when William Saliba played a sloppy and all too casual clearance right into his path.

The former Manchester United forward has scored more goals against Arsenal than any other club, and his eyes lit up for another as he steadied himself and got the first-time shot off at Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.

But White was alert to the danger and did superbly to spring into action and produce a heroic block. He got his body in the way of the ball and it was then hooked away to safety.

Meanwhile, former England international Jamie Carragher believes that White should be in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for the World Cup, which kicks off in just three weeks.

“I think the two that stand out are Maddison and Ben White. Ben White, the form he has shown in the Arsenal team this season and the fact we have problems at right-back and a right-sided centre-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“If we play three at the back he’s more of a right-sided centre-back than a wing-back. But he’s got forward of late and created goals. He’s a really cool and calm footballer, which makes him more suited to international football as well.”

When you see pieces of defending like this, it’s difficult to argue differently.
