Watch: Arsenal loanee Charlie Patino scores and assists in big derby win

Highly-rated Arsenal loanee Charlie Patino shone in Blackpool’s big Lancashire derby victory over local rivals Preston North End.

Preston have a reputation for being one of the most boring sides in England this season, with a miserly defence and an attack that doesn’t score many, but – true to form for a derby – the formbook went out the window and we were treated to a six-goal thriller.

The game was 1-1 at half-time, but Patino struck to regain Blackpool’s lead midway through the second half. In the 81st minute, he then turned provider and assisted Jerry Yates’ goal to make it 3-1. Another goal apiece in the dying minutes saw the clash finish 4-2 at Bloomfield Road.

“What we have done again is show we’re capable of scoring goals and I think they showed a lot of character the players today, it’s difficult in these games, especially after a hard week to come out and put a performance in as well as they did, they’ve got to take a lot of credit for it,” Tangerines boss Michael Appleton told reporters after the big derby victory.

“I think it’s always crucial going ahead in games because it gives you a chance to open up and be a little bit more free, I think we saw that with the players once we got the goal, that was our best spell after going ahead. It was a great bit of skill from Sonny, he contributed well when he came off the bench, Charlie it was a fantastic finish.

“You could see one or two players take an extra touch of the ball, have a little bit more composure which is difficult in a derby day.”

There’s plenty of hype about Patino, who is gradually getting used to regular senior football. Here’s one of the famous Hale End academy’s most highly-rated prospects. He scored on his senior Gunners debut last season and has been tipped to break into Mikel Arteta’s squad later down the line.

The 19-year-old midfielder is certainly progressing along nicely in the Championship.

“A joy to watch, glides effortlessly through midfield and his technical quality for his goal and Yates assist spoke volumes of where he is heading,” wrote Sean Mcginlay in LancsLive, giving Patino a 9/10 in the player ratings.

We also saw a spiky side to the youngster, who celebrated his goal by putting his finger to his lips and shushing the away fans. He might only be on loan but he’s certainly got into the derby day spirit.
