Watch: Fabrizio Romano on Arsenal and their ‘mystery winger’ target
Arsenal have been one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs in the transfer market his summer, but it sounds like they’re not done just yet.
Yesterday, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners announced the signing of Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City in a £31million deal.
Zinchenko is their fifth summer signing, which takes their total spending to £118million. The 25-year-old, who can play in midfield or at left-back, follows the additions of Gabriel Jesus from the same club, Portuguese playmaker Fabio Vieira from Porto, USA international goalkeeper Matt Turner from New England Revolution and Brazilian starlet Marquinhos from Sao Paolo.
But transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano believes there is still more work to be done when it comes to bolstering Arteta’s squad as they look to get back into the Champions League next term.
The journalist was giving an in-depth lowdown on all things Arsenal in CBS Sports’ Que Golazo podcast and got onto the subject of the Gunners’ next acquisition.
Arsenal had a bid turned down from Leeds United for Brazil star Raphinha, who has since moved to Barcelona, earlier in the window. But they haven’t given up on adding a different wide attacker according to Romano.
“Good question, I will try to find out and tell you in the coming days,” the journalist began in response to a question about Arsenal’s rumoured winger target.
“Many rumours, for many players, like [Moussa] Diaby [the Bayer Leverkusen winger], but the player is very clear, he wants to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. He has no intention to leave and Bayer Leverkusen when approached have been asking for €70million, so it’s a really complicated deal.
“So we will see. I’m sure that Arsenal will go with their own ideas, as they did with Vlahovic in January. They wanted Vlahovic, but it was impossible, because the player only wanted to join Juventus, and I think Edu was perfect in that situation. Not wasting money on a striker they weren’t trusting, but waiting and signing Gabriel Jesus in the summer because he was the main target.”
