Watch: Fabrizio Romano spells out likelihood of Zinchenko to Arsenal
Arsenal are looking to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City this summer. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has broken down all you need to know about the potential transfer.
Both Arsenal and Man City have been busy in restructuring their squads this summer.
Pep Guardiola’s City have dominated English football in recent years, winning four of the last five Premier League titles, but they look set to have a fresh new look in the upcoming 2022-23 campaign.
The reigning champions have spent almost £100million on Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United and Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, but have recouped more from Raheem Sterling’s move to Chelsea and Gabriel Jesus’ move to Manchester United, plus further sales of peripheral squad players Pedro Porro and Ko Itakura.
Jesus’ move from City to Arsenal has been the Gunners’ biggest headline-making deal of the summer so far, but Mikel Arteta’s squad has also been boosted by the additions of Portuguese playmaker Fabio Vieira from Porto and USA international goalkeeper Matt Turner from New England Revolution and Brazilian starlet Marquinhos from Sao Paolo.
Now, it looks as though Ukraine international Zinchenko is the next piece on the agenda for City and Arsenal.
Guardiola’s side are willing to let the 25-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances for the club, leave in order to fund a move for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella.
“Arsenal are now trying to sign Zinchenko from Manchester City,”
“They are preparing a proposal. The player would be open to leaving Man City and they’re open to letting him go.
“Why? Because they’re willing to bid for Marc Cucurella. He’s the player they want as their new left-back if Zinchenko leaves the club.
“Arsenal are interested, Everton are also keen for this possibility so Zinchenko is one of the names for Arsenal. Not the only one. He’s the priority. The other one is Sergio Gomes, the left-back from Anderlecht. These are the two names on the list for Edu and Arteta.”
A move for a new left-back would make sense for Arsenal, given Kieran Tierney’s injury struggles and Nuno Tavares’ failure to convince last term.
Zinchenko would be extra-useful for Mikel Arteta, given his versatility and capability of slotting into central midfield, which he does at international level.
Like Jesus, Arteta knows Zinchenko from his time as Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad. Evidently, he trusts the Ukrainian’s ability and character.
