Watch: Ornstein delivers update on Arsenal’s deadline day transfer plans
David Ornstein has delivered an update on the business that Arsenal are likely – and unlikely – to do in the final hours of the summer transfer window.
It’s been a strong summer for Arsenal so far. The likes of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, plus returning loanee William Saliba, appear to have massively strengthened Mikel Arteta’s first-choice XI.
The Gunners sit top of the Premier League table after winning their first five matches of the season. But will they look to bolster Arteta’s squad further on transfer deadline day?
There has been considerable investment to the tune of approximately £120million so far this summer, but they have been outspent by top-four rivals Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United and haven’t made a signing since Zinchenko over a month ago.
The noises coming out of Arsenal have suggested that the club are still open to doing more business – including from Arteta himself.
Wolves starlet Pedro Neto has been cited as their top target while Ukrainian wonderkid Mikhaylo Mudryk is another name that’s been mentioned as an option.
However, in the past few days, following a knock suffered by key man Thomas Partey and a serious injury sustained by Mohamed Elneny, attention is said to have turned to a central midfielder.
So could Arsenal add a signing or two on deadline day? Here’s the full lowdown from The Athletic’s transfer insider Ornstein.
“Yes [more business] is realistic, in terms of the fact that they’ll try to do something,” the journalist said, speaking on The Athletic’s live transfer deadline day YouTube video.
“They’ve made that pretty clear. Whether they will be able to complete what they’re trying, we’ll have to wait and see. Things can happen really quickly. More so on a loan basis than permanent, I’m speaking generally here, not necessarily for Arsenal.
“We don’t know what they’re going to attempt to pull off at this moment in time. Of course the position of focus has shifted somewhat from a wide player to midfield once we reported that there had been a significant injury for Mohamed Elneny on top of an existing injury for Thomas Partey.
“Suddenly, No.6, the holding central midfielder, became the target. Now Arsenal, of course, have been linked with Youri Tielemans all summer and I’ve reported on a number of occasions that all of the key decision-makers at Arsenal have been all-in on him, in favour of that signing.
“But these things are more complicated because you need to agree a fee, you need to agree personal terms, you need potentially a player to leave. That would’ve been earlier in the window, now of course the situation has changed at Arsenal.
“The noises we’re getting from around the game, whether that’s Arsenal, the player and other contacts, that Youri Tielemans to Arsenal is very unlikely to happen.
“In fact, Youri Tielemans is unlikely to move at the time we broadcast this. Subject to change, you never know what might materialise late on, and money often talks.”
