Watch: All of Diogo Dalot’s incredible back-post defending vs West Ham

Diogo Dalot’s resurgence at Manchester United can be summed up by his superb individual performance against West Ham on Sunday.

The Portugal international is among a number of United players that have improved significantly under the guidance of new boss Erik ten Hag.

Many questioned the club’s failure to recruit a new right-back in the summer, with question marks over what Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s offensive qualities and Dalot’s ability to make the spot his own.

But Dalot has enjoyed an excellent run of form so far in 2022-23. On Sunday, the 23-year-old earned rave reviews from Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville, who made over 600 appearances and won eight Premier League titles as United’s right-back.

He played a vital role in keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over West Ham, having made some vital last-ditch interventions in the box.

“I’m really happy with the development of Diogo,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports. “He’s done really well.

“As you [Neville] mentioned, you played in that position yourself, so you can be critical because you know how to play there, but I think his defending positions are growing from game to game. His timing, also his duels, is better from game to game.

“In possession, I think he’s really good and he has the breath to go up and down [the wing]. The development is really good, but I have to mention that a club like Manchester United needs two good full-backs, because we have a lot of games to cover.”

The United manager is not the only one that was impressed by Dalot’s performance against West Ham.

“The real star of the show was Diogo Dalot. If there was a header to be made, he made it,” wrote Garth Crooks in his BBC column.

“He defended brilliantly and at times in very difficult circumstances.””United are now just one point outside the top four and looking like a proper team again.”

In particular, Dalot’s superb back-post defending stood out, as this compilation shows clearly.
