The saga involving Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea is the big story of the summer – and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an in-depth analysis of it in his latest YouTube video.

De Jong signed for Barcelona in 2019 and has since played 140 times for the Catalan giants. But the move has not worked out as either party had perhaps hoped at the time.

The Dutch midfielder has shown his class in some moments at Barca, but he has not kicked on from the form that he showed for Ajax in the season before his €75million move.

With midfield options now plentiful for Barca boss Xavi and the club attempting to reduce their wage bill, they are reportedly now looking to move him on.

Manchester United are interested and even agreed an €85million fee with Barca, according to The Athletic.

But the player has so far refused to sanction the move, and in recent weeks there has been speculation that Chelsea may step in to hijack the deal.

So what is the current situation with regards to the future of the Netherlands international? Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano has broken it down in his latest YouTube video.

“Barcelona are prepared to let [De Jong] go,” Romano began. “Not because they don’t like Frenkie De Jong. Xavi is a big fan and also [Barcelona president Joan] Laporta is always stating in public how happy he is with Frenkie de Jong. But because of his wages.

“It’s not just the fee, it’s because of the really important salary of Frenkie de Jong to be activated this season. So they need to sell some players and Frenkie de Jong is one of the players who could be on the market.

“But, I always told you, Frenkie de Jong doesn’t want to leave Barcelona.”

What might happen in the coming month, then?

“With Manchester United, there is an agreement in principle since the beginning of July. An agreement for €75million plus €10milion in add-ons. But still, not agreed on Frenkie de Jong’s side.

“Man United are still insisting and pushing but they are not happy with the current situation, because they are on this Frenkie de Jong situation since long time, but still no green light from the player.”

On the more recent development of Chelsea’s interest, Romano added: “It’s absolutely true that Chelsea are interested in Frenkie de Jong.

“Todd Boehly is in love with the player. Thomas Tuchel is in love with the player. So Chelsea would love to sign Frenkie de Jong.

“They already had some contact with Barcelona to explore this possibility, to understand how much will be the price tag. But there is still no official bid or no official agreement between Barca and Chelsea.

“They will move only in case Frenkie will give the green light to the move. Chelsea will be on it with Frenkie and Barca only in case the player will change his mind.”

“And at the moment, this is still not the case, I am told. Frenkie, as of today, is still insisting to stay at Barcelona and not take a salary cut.”
