Watch: Fabrizio Romano reveals MLS star Barcelona missed out on

Barcelona were one of the busiest clubs on transfer deadline day, having signed new full-backs Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin, but they also persued other potential deals according to Fabrizio Romano.

Famed transfer insider Romano was one of football’s busiest men during the summer window and you imagine he’ll have a quieter few weeks ahead as attention turns away from the transfer market and back to actual football.

But he’s continued to provide us updates with the background information on some of the biggest deals that didn’t quite make it over the line on deadline day.

Having decided against keeping Dani Alves whilst allowing USA international Sergino Dest to leave on loan for AC Milan, the La Liga giants were in the market for a new right-back.

They eventually ended up with returning academy graduate Bellerin, signed on a free after he terminated his contracted with Arsenal. But they also looked at signing rising MLS star Julian Araujo, a 21-year-old Mexico international.

“I want to start with Barcelona,” Romano began on his latest YouTube post.

“Because during deadline day with Barcelona we had many rumours.

“We know that they had many possibilities, with Memphis Depay to leave the club, but at the end there was no advanced negotiation on the player’s side. They tried to find a solution until the last minutes but there was no negotiation with Chelsea or any other club.

“Depay was offered to Chelsea, but Chelsea had different ideas of course, with Aubameyang, but there is a player who was part of Barcelona’s potential plans because of the timing of the deal, but also because of the costs of the deal.

“He’s called Julian Araujo, playing for Los Angeles Galaxy. He’s a half-Mexican, half-American player, very talented, and he was part of the plans for Barcelona. He was the player they wanted as their new right-back.

“It was a surprising deal, but it didn’t happen because it was impossible to complete the negotiation in 24 hours, so Barcelona instead decided to go for Hector Bellerin on a free transfer. They completed the agreement, but Araujo can be a player for European football in the next months, so keep an eye on Julian Araujo, because he’s a very good right-back and many European clubs are monitoring him.”
