Watch: Fabrizio Romano outlines Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd strategy

Manchester United are currently in great form under Erik ten Hag and Fabirizo Romano has outlined the transfer strategy of the United boss for the January window.

The Premier League giants are showing early signs of returning to their former glory under Ten Hag, who has built a hungry side with quality at both ends of the pitch.

After signing the likes of Casemiro, Antony and Lisandro Martinez in the summer – who have all proven to be successful additions to the United squad – the ex-Ajax manager hit out at the club’s previous actions in the transfer market.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Ten Hag said: “Manchester United didn’t exactly have the fear factor last season.

“There was no spirit. I saw no team dynamic in the squad. The mental resilience was very low. I saw that as an outsider – and also noticed it in my first weeks at the club.

“I looked at the culture of the club. I asked ‘how did Manchester United become great?’

“The club has bought an unimaginable number of players in recent years who have not been good enough.

“Most purchases have been average – and, at United, average is not good enough. United’s shirt weighs heavily.”

Ten Hag added: “Only real personalities, who can perform under great pressure, can play here. We needed personalities. That’s why the acquisition of Casemiro was so important. Along with Raphael Varane, we now have a second player who has experience of winning titles.

“Malacia, Martinez, Casemiro, Antony are all fighters, while Christian Eriksen is a technical winner and a great personality. We want the best of the best. Any players we bring to Manchester United must meet the highest standard.”

And Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has revealed what Ten Hag’s public utterance means for United’s January window.

“This is a very clear message to the board and the future of Manchester United with new owners,” the Italian journalist said. “Erik ten Hag wants United to sign players who can be consistent for the present and for the future.

“Ten Hag also wants to guarantee the future of the players who are already consistent like Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot. He wants both of them to commit to long-term contracts.

“He is pushing for both players to be signed up for the long-term and also to sign players who can be important to the future of the club.

“This is the message and this is what Ten Hag is telling the United board. This will be the mission in January and also in the summer, when United will be back on the market for many different players.”
