Watch: Man Utd target Frenkie de Jong gets abused by Barcelona fans

Manchester United and Chelsea transfer target Frenkie de Jong was subject to shocking abuse from Barcelona fans ahead of a recent training session.

Despite the fact that United and Barcelona agreed on a £73million fee, De Jong has snubbed a move to Old Trafford and insists that he doesn’t want to leave.

But the midfielder is reportedly on a contract worth €560,962 a week and Barcelona need him to take a massive pay cut.

“He wants to stay and we want him to stay. That is the most important,” Barcelona president Joan Laporta said during their pre-season tour of the USA.

“What is clear is that we have a new salary scale and all the players have to fit into it. We are trying to make these players understand the reality of the club.

“We find ourselves with a salary mass triggered by more than 40 per cent. We all have to make an effort. We are going to do everything possible to make him stay and we hope that the player will also do everything possible to stay.”

While the Netherlands international wants to stay at Barcelona, he is currently owed about £17million in deferred salary payments and is unwilling to lower his wages.

“Frenkie de Jong never had an intention to take a pay cut to stay at Barca,” transfer guru Fabrizio Romano said at the end of July.

“At the moment, there is no intention on the player and his agent’s side to accept a pay cut and this was communicated by his agents to Barca two weeks ago.”

Despite their financial troubles, Barcelona have spent over £150million on new signings this summer and brought in Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde and Franck Kessie.

They managed to raise money by selling off 25% of their domestic television rights to the investment firm Sixth Street for 25 years and 24.5% of Barca Studios, their in-house production company, to Socios.com.

But Barcelona haven’t been able to comply with La Liga’s financial fair play criteria and still need to raise more funds.

As things stand, they will not be able to register all their new signings in time for their La Liga opener at home to Rayo Vallecano. Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto are also not registered after penning new contracts this summer.

Barcelona’s attempts to try and raise funds have seen fans turn on players in recent days. Martin Braithwaite was booed as he entered the pitch in their latest pre-season friendly, with the striker reportedly refusing to leave the club.

A video shared by Diario Sport has now shown supporters hurling abuse at De Jong as he arrived for training, with one fan shouting: “Lower your salary you bitch!”
